The Sd Kfz 232 first entered service in 1933, based on the standard three axle truck chassis but featured a direction changing gearbox, enabling the vehicle to be driven both forward and in reverse in four gears. The 232 formed the backbone of the German Army's Armoured Reconnaissance Corps during early WWII. The 232 was armed with a 2cm KwK 30 or 38 and a 7.92mm MG34.
