T-34/57 with ZIS-4M Gun

By 1943, the T-34/76 gun was proving inadequate against the German Panther and Tiger I. In July 1943, four T-34 were converted to mount the high velocity 57mm ZIS-4M Gun which provided better penetration. However, the ZIS-4M's smaller bore meant it could not fire an adequate high explosive round for general use. Ultimately the F-34 gun was replaced with a D-5T and ZIS-S-53 85mm gun housed in a bigger T-34 turret and the T-34/85 was born.
