Made famous during the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire was without doubt the fighter of 1940. The Mk Ia was one of the earliest of Spitfire variants armed with eight 0.303 Browning machine guns and 300 rounds per gun. During the Battle of Britain, Spitfires would take on the German fighter cover while the more numerous Hurricanes would take down the German bombers.
