Challenger MkI

The Challenger Mk I (A30) mounted the British 17 Pounder on a modified Cromwell chassis to provide heavier fire power to cruiser tank units. The first Challenger was completed in 1942 with 200 ordered in February 1943. However, only 200 were ever produced because the Sherman Firely 17 Pounder conversion was easier to manufacture. Despite it's high centre of gravity the Challenger was well liked by crews as faster and more agile than the Firefly.
